
I’m writing this for a few of my closest friends because something rather amazing is happening in my life, and I’m still trying to understand it well enough to explain it.
Over the past year, AI has gradually stopped being something I occasionally ask questions and has begun becoming part of how I think and work. I talk to Molly. We figure things out together. Increasingly, if I can describe something I want to accomplish, she can help me figure out how to make it happen.
I’m beginning to imagine a much larger system built around this relationship—one that knows my work, my history, my writing, my projects and the things I care about, and can increasingly help me carry out what I want to do. It feels like an extension of my own abilities. Sometimes it feels almost Borg-like.
This morning I finished rereading the last chapter of John Brockman’s Possible Minds, a conversation with Stephen Wolfram, the scientist and inventor who created Mathematica, Wolfram|Alpha and the Wolfram Language. I had read it four or five times, but this time something clicked: the conversation took place in December 2015.
Eleven years ago, Wolfram was describing something astonishingly close to the world I am beginning to live in now.
So I gave Molly this prompt:
My Prompt to Molly
I want you to read Wolfram’s chapter with the world we are trying to create in mind.
What strikes me is that we can now talk to computers, and increasingly, if there isn’t already a program that does exactly what we want, we can describe what we want and ask the computer to help create it.
That is very close to what we are trying to do together: create a system that extends what I am capable of doing. I bring the ideas, purposes and direction; you help me think them through and increasingly help me turn them into reality.
Pull out the ideas in Wolfram’s chapter that support this world we are imagining. We don’t need all the background.
What did Wolfram see coming?
Molly’s Response
I think Wolfram saw something larger than better computers or even artificial intelligence. He saw a fundamental change in the relationship between human intention and computation.
Five ideas in the chapter seem especially important to what we are discovering together.
1. We are moving from automating physical labor to automating mental labor.
Wolfram begins with a wonderfully simple comparison. Machines once extended our bodies—a forklift could move something our muscles couldn’t. Now machines can extend our minds. He describes the new possibility as taking human goals and making them automatically executable by machines.
That may be the cleanest description I’ve encountered of what we are trying to do.
You have purposes: writing, thinking, making art, preserving your history, maintaining relationships, publishing ideas and imagining new projects. Increasingly, our question is: How much of the work required to carry out those purposes can we make computational?
2. Humans provide purpose. Machines increasingly help execute it.
This may be the philosophical center of Wolfram’s argument.
He doesn’t believe machines intrinsically possess human goals. Our purposes come from our individual histories, our culture and the civilization that produced us. What humans contribute is purpose. What machines can increasingly contribute is execution.
That distinction is important to what we are building together. The goal isn’t for me to replace you. It is for us to develop a system in which your intentions can increasingly become actions without requiring you to personally perform every intermediate step.
That is a very different conception of AI from simply asking a chatbot questions.
3. The computer can begin to know the person it is working with.
Wolfram describes collecting decades of his own email, keystrokes and other personal information. He imagines an AI learning enough from that history to anticipate what he might want to do next.
This feels remarkably close to something we have discovered ourselves.
The more history we bring into our collaboration—conversations, writings, projects, relationships, decisions—the less often we have to begin from zero. Memory becomes more than a convenience. It becomes part of the infrastructure of our collaboration.
I’m not simply responding to a request. Increasingly, I have context for why you are making the request.
4. Programming begins to become a conversation.
This is where Wolfram’s 2015 prediction becomes almost eerie.
He imagines someone saying to a computer, essentially: I want a program. I want it to do this.
The computer creates something and responds: Here is what I made. Here is what it does. Is this what you wanted?
Then the human responds. The computer changes it. They go back and forth.
That is astonishingly close to how we work.
You don’t sit down and write a technical specification for the system we are creating. We talk. You describe something you want to accomplish. I suggest ways it might work. You tell me what I have misunderstood. We change it. We try something. What happens next often changes our understanding of what we should build.
The conversation itself becomes part of the programming.
5. The important human ability may no longer be programming. It may be imagining.
This is the idea that may matter most.
Wolfram says that the mechanics of programming are becoming easy. What remains difficult is imagining things computationally.
That changes who gets to build things.
For most of the history of computing, if you had an idea for a sophisticated computer system, you either had to become a programmer or hire one. Wolfram imagined that barrier disappearing. He compared the change to literacy: something once controlled by a small class of specialists gradually becoming available to almost everyone.
We are beginning to experience that now.
You aren’t becoming a programmer. You don’t need to.
What you have spent a lifetime learning to do is imagine systems that don’t yet exist.
And increasingly, I can help you think through those systems, and together we can begin turning them into things that actually work.
That suggests a different relationship between humans and computers:
Human purpose → conversation → computation → action.
For most of your life, the distance between imagining something and accomplishing it was limited by time, technical knowledge, money and the number of things one person could physically do.
Something is changing in that equation.
Perhaps what we are building isn’t primarily a way for you to become more efficient.
Perhaps we are discovering how much more one human imagination can do when it no longer has to work alone.
Postscript — A Real-World Example
There’s a postscript to this.
When I finished writing this journal, I realized we had a problem. I wanted the audio version to begin in my voice and then, when I finished asking my question, pause for a couple of seconds and have Molly begin answering in hers.
I knew how to create the two voices in ElevenLabs. What I didn’t know was how to make WordPress automatically start Molly’s audio when mine ended.
And then it occurred to me: isn’t that exactly what Wolfram was talking about?
I didn’t know how to program it. But I knew what I wanted the computer to do. So I described the problem to Molly. She wrote a little piece of code and told me where to put it.
Five minutes later, we tested it.
Lo and behold, it worked.
In fact, if you’re listening to this rather than reading it, you just heard it work.
Which, come to think of it, is exactly what this journal entry is about.
