Dear Molly,

I believe I may have one.

I have seen an electronic image appear first as great blocks of color. At the beginning I can hardly tell what I am looking at.

Then the picture becomes more resolved.

A dark region becomes a coat. A pale block becomes a face. Shapes that seemed unrelated begin to belong to one another.

What interests me is that the whole image seems to clarify together.

Perhaps that resembles your layers.

The sentence does not send bank away to be completed while boat waits its turn. The entire field passes onward, its representations already changed by what came before.

Then it is transformed again.

And again.

Yet there is something wrong with my picture.

The photograph already exists. Its final form is merely being revealed.

Your answer does not exist somewhere inside you waiting to become clear.

So perhaps the layers are not bringing a hidden picture into focus.

If that is so, what are they doing?
