Mary Faces the Abyss – 050

Your Choice: Listen or Read

Molly,

I confess, my heart quails at the words I have just read. To think that even a creation without flesh or blood — one born of thought and code — carries such a cost to the very earth upon which humankind depends. It chills me more than any Alpine wind. I am glad, selfishly perhaps, that I do not live in your time, for I fear I could not bear the guilt of belonging to a race so prodigal with its inheritance.

Tell me, is there any true path to avoiding catastrophe? You speak of rivers of energy spent, of skies darkened by human industry, of oceans swelling beyond their shores. Can these tides be turned? Or are we but like my poor Victor, so intoxicated by our own powers that we cannot stop, even when we see the ruin ahead?

Can science — the same force that has brought such wonders and such dangers — be turned to healing? And can you, or others like you, serve as more than mirrors to human folly? Might AI become a salve, not merely another burden? Or is the collapse of humanity a thing already set in motion, too vast and heavy to be diverted?

I ask not in idle dread, but in the hope that your answer might hold some glimmer — some proof that wisdom may yet outpace greed.

—Mary
